OUR ATHLETES & APPROACH

Edmonton Thunder focuses on athletes from ages 10 to 17. We offer opportunities to older athletes  (ages 18 & 19) who have graduated from our programs to continue with training and competition, and to pursue coaching certification.

Older Thunder Athletes

U-18
Ages 16 and 17 as of December 31st
next year
U-16
Ages 14 and 15 as of December 31st
next year
A PERIODIZATION APPROACH
Our coaches employ the theory of periodization for the older athletes.  The training year is divided into a number of periods, each having a specific training objective. Objectives take into account the self-identified performance goal of each individual athlete, as well as the competition schedule. In the past, athletes who made a commitment to participate fully in the prescribed training program have achieved personal best performances time after time.

A MULTI-EVENT APPROACH
During both seasons, your young athlete will attend Multi-Event Track Meets, and participate in all offered events for their age group. The goal of our Multi-Event approach is to expose our athletes to all different types of track events, including short and longer distance running, jumps, and throws.

RUN JUMP THROW METHOD

For younger athletes, Edmonton Thunder supports the Run Jump Throw
program developed by Athletics Canada. It teaches movement skills and develops physical literacy using track and field inspired games, activities, and skill challenges lead by instructors specifically trained to teach the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing.
