Training Philosophy and Strategy
Edmonton Thunder focuses on peewee, bantam, midget and youth age groups (age 9 and up). We offer opportunities to junior athletes who have graduated from our programs to continue with training and competition and to pursue coaching certification.
Every athlete will achieve his or her performance goal for each season – continuous personal best performances year over year – as part of a value of life long self-directed personal improvement.
Edmonton Thunder is privileged to have excellent coaching capacity employing the theory of periodization for the older athletes. The training year is divided into a number of periods with each period having a specific training objective taking into account the self-identified performance goal of the athlete and the competition schedule. In the past, athletes who made a commitment to participate fully in the prescribed training program have achieved personal best performances time after time.
For younger athletes Edmonton Thunder supports the Run Jump Throw program developed by Athletics Canada. It teaches fundamental movement skills and develops physical literacy. Using track and field inspired games, activities and skill challenges lead by instructors specifically trained to teach the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing.
Edmonton Thunder is a community based, not for profit minor sports association commited to developing and promoting the sport of athletics in Edmonton since 1994. The club is affiliated with Athletics Alberta and provides training and support to athletes competing in middle distance, sprinting, hurdling and field events.
Our goal is to help each person achieve their personal best by developing athletic abilities to their full potential.
